We have a long history of working with virtually every UK, European and US Jazz musician, and piano micing is a much discussed area of sound reinforcement, and every engineer has a different approach to the piano. We're not going to lay down the law with a single solution, but consider the following (I'm assuming a grand piano and a pair of C414 or equivalent):
How to mic depends very much on the context: relative acoustic levels of piano and drums, type of music etc, and different solutions work better in different circumstances.
The piano is a large instrument, you wouldn't mic a marimba or drum kit from 2" away. Try moving piano mics out as far as you dare (and a bit more !)
If you have to go to short stick, try switching mics to omni mode.
A pick-up (such as Barcus-Berry or AKG C411) can give you a bit of extra mid-range punch, especially useful in louder compositions, but don't overdo it, or try an SM57 or similar in a sound hole, or from underneath.
